The full implementation of the London stroke model provides that all patients with a suspected stroke (i.e. FAST positive) in London are taken to one of eight Hyper Acute Stroke Units (HASUs) in the capital for immediate, expert care from specialised staff.

Less than a year after implementation, the NHS in London received the 2010 Health Service Journal (HSJ) award for Clinical Service Redesign.

London hospitals top in stroke care

The National Sentinal Stroke Audit has released data showing five London Hyper Acute Stroke Units (HASUs) are amongst the top seven sites in the country. All eight London HASUs are ranked in the top quartile of national performance.
